Grimaldi Forum, Monaco

Booth D5 and D6

Robilant+Voena is pleased to return to Art Monte-Carlo, with an exceptional selection of artworks across two booths the first dedicated to American artist Julian Schnabel, and the second offering a curated display of works from the 18th century to the present day.

Julian Schnabel: Permanently Becoming (Booth D5)

This solo presentation highlights some of the most compelling examples of the American artist’s varied and audacious practice. The selected works are all executed on a grand scale, creating an impressive visual encounter with the paintings that interweave personal and cultural histories, as is characteristic of Schnabel’s wider oeuvre.

Indeed, the pieces have been carefully curated along the theme of exploration and cultural connections, to resonate with the internationalism of Monaco and to reflect its unique position as a coastal destination throughout history. Among the selection, an example of Schnabel’s Capri Paintings and two Chinese Paintings exhibit his characteristic gestural brushwork, layering expressive marks over printed materials that allude to the artist’s longstanding fascination with cultures, human knowledge and artistry that are so fundamental to his practice.

Old Masters, Modern and Contemporary (Booth D6)

With works from the late 18th century to the present day, our selection reflects Robilant+Voena's ability to create conversations between art from different eras, also emphasising our growing contemporary programme.

The trans-historical selection starts with a selection of figurative works from the late 18th- to the 20th-centuries, including a rare equine painting by Bénigne Gagneraux paired with a unique Marino Marini sculpture, a drawing by Edgar Degas, and paintings by Pierre Bonnard, Umberto Boccioni and Gino Severini.

The juxtaposition of landscapes by Etienne Moreau-Nélaton, Giorgio Morandi and Salvo allude to the changing attitudes to place and representation over the course of a century. Works by René Magritte and Giorgio de Chirico highlight some of the most iconic motifs of these titans of 20th-century art.

Robilant+Voena’s specialism in Post-War Italian art is evident through the selection of works by Lucio Fontana, including paintings and ceramics, and an important metal sculpture by Fausto Melotti.

Selected contemporary works reflect the gallery’s expanding contemporary programme, with works by Minjung Kim, Philippe Pastor, Sergio Roger and Jordan Watson.
