Robilant+Voena is pleased to be returning to TEFAF Maastricht with a presentation that demonstrates our unique strengths in the two fields of Old Masters and Post-War Italian art, as well as works by selected contemporary artists, creating a dialogue across the ages.
Taking centre stage is a recently re-discovered masterpiece by the most celebrated female painter of the Italian Baroque, Artemisia Gentileschi, which comes to TEFAF having starred in our New York exhibition Ahead of Her Time. This beguiling depiction of the Penitent Magdalene remained unknown for decades in a private collection, only to be brought to light after cleaning and scientific research.
Complementing this museum-quality piece, our presentation offers a sweeping view of Italian Old Masters, including a strong presence of 18th-century Venetian paintings, such as masterpieces by father and son Tiepolo – a rare Punchinello painting and a testa di fantasia. These are joined by pictures by Giovanni Paolo Panini and Alessandro Magnasco. Carefully selected French paintings by Lubin Baugin, Louis-Gabriel Blanchet and Anne-Louis Girodet reveal the powerful influence of Italian schools across Europe.
Continuing this narrative into the 19th century, our selection shows highlights of this transformational century, concentrating on Italian and French spheres. These include a rare head study by Francesco Hayez, a charming flower painting by Victoria Dubourg, a drawing of two ballet dancers by Edgar Degas, and an intimate domestic scene by Pierre Bonnard.
Interspersed among the breathtaking sweep of Old Masters and 19th-century paintings, are carefully selected pieces by modern pioneers, especially those of Post-War Italy. A core group of works – paintings, ceramics and bronzes – by Lucio Fontana sit alongside examples by Agostino Bonalumi, Alberto Burri, and Enrico Castellani, emphasising the radical experiments of these artists in the 1950s and ‘60s. These are juxtaposed with an energetic drawing by Giacomo Balla and a luminous landscape by Salvo dating from 1985. Examples by international masters such as a lively painting by Joan Miró, and a vibrant work by Sam Francis, expand the modern selection.
Bringing the display into the present day are works by Julian Schnabel, Damien Hirst, Matteo Pugliese and Harumi Klossowska de Rola, whose practices find their roots in the artistic traditions of previous centuries. A special focus of the contemporary section is a compelling painting by Antoine Roegiers, one of the artists featured by TEFAF Editorial. Coinciding with the fair, R+V is holding a solo exhibition of Roegiers’ paintings and video works in London, entitled The Flames of Vanity, his first solo show in the UK.
