Description
A wheatsheaf with stems exploding outwards, reaching towards the sky; this artwork pays tribute to the humble crop which has sustained human civilisation across the ages. The tightly bundled stems grounding the sculpture appear to break free from the neat bronze clasps that bind them together, moving upwards and splaying like a celebration of freedom and a reminder of the irresistible natural cycle of growth and creation.
The sculpture references ancient mythology in its title, Ceres, who was the Roman goddess of agriculture and of the harvest. The links between nature and the divine were central to many ancient civilisations, and Harumi takes inspiration from this sacred respect of the natural world, Works such as Ceres elevate the beauty of aspects of nature that might otherwise be overlooked, illuminating how this humble cereal crop has provided for humanity throughout history, and reminding us of the interdependence of mankind and the natural world.
