Description

Richard Hudson is a British sculptor renowned for his organic artistic language, which is translated into sculptures in bronze, polished steel, marble and wood. Drawing inspiration from luminaries such as Constantin Brâncuşi, Jean Arp, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Anthony Caro, his abstract forms evoke his close, abiding relationship with landscape, which is transformed by imagination. Born in 1954 in Gloucestershire to a farming family, his relationship with art and the environment started at a young age through outdoor walks in the English countryside with his artist mother.

The artist explains: “I have been captivated by my urban and natural surroundings and their evolving landscapes, channelling the fluidity of these changes in my monumental outdoor sculptures which reflect their surroundings in their polished mirrored steel surfaces. I aim for my sculptures to enrich and deepen visitor experience, creating new ways for people to experience and enjoy the space: In this busy, digital world, my works foster a sense of wellbeing by suggesting a slower, more contemplative way of finding joy through absorbing one’s position in space.”

Hudson brings to his practice a unique album of visual recollections and broad experiences, having travelled extensively and picked up an array of skills from working in different professions. In a technological world, he strongly believes that the skill of a craftsman cannot be underestimated. His contemporary work is the result of a hands-on process; he personally manipulates the diverse materials and tools of his art at every stage of the process.

Hudson starts by modelling maquettes by hand in clay or plaster until the form of the composition materialises, and his sculptures seek to exist in harmony with their environments. The reflective surfaces of Hudson’s works in polished mirrored steel absorb their surroundings, bringing everything in the vicinity into the sculptural space and creating a symbiotic relationship between artwork and setting, whilst the smooth, tactile surface of his contemporary marble pieces gives them a timeless quality.

Hudson’s career has spanned across Europe, the USA, the Far East, the Middle East, and Latin and South America. With over 60 monumental sculptures placed in private collections as well as global cities, including London, New York, California, Vancouver, Dubai, Taiwan, Beijing, Singapore, Istanbul, and Mexico, the artist continues his exploration through sculpture of human society and the natural world.
