Description
This intricate pendant, carved from buffalo horn and inlaid with precious stones, depicts in miniature the skull of a marmoset. The piece alludes to the Day of the Dead in Mexico, in which death is celebrated, unshackled from its negative connotations. With an upbringing infused with Shintoism and Catholicism, Harumi views death as part of the cycle of life, a natural process which can be followed by rebirth and reincarnation. In creating this artwork, Harumi embeds this belief in the skull of a monkey, recasting the symbol of death into an object of beauty and splendour. The small arrangements of gemstones in the shape of a cross also reference the Catholic faith, while the jewels underline the richness of the natural world.
