Description
Lee Bae's practice is defined by an unwavering dedication to a monochrome palette, employing charcoal throughout his work, utilising shifts in texture and tone to great effect. Despite the limitations of the material, Bae's application showcases a meticulous attention to detail and form, from his works on canvas, to large-scale sculptural installations. Bae views charcoal as emblematic of the cycle of life, as material breaks down into ash.

Born in Korea in 1956, Bae lives and works in Paris. His work has been exhibited internationally to great critical acclaim, with solo shows including those France, Italy, Korea, and the United States. In 2018, a solo exhibition of the artist's solo works was held at the Fondation Maeght, in Saint Paul de Vence. Bae's work is included in many important public and private collections internationally.

In this work, entitled 'Issu du Feu', the artist has created a mosaic-like assemblage of sliced charcoal, demonstrating the natural qualities of the material, whilst lending structure and rigidity to the otherwise organic form.
