In this energetic work, Schnabel utilises a found image with muted tones, layering it with a strong splash of red. Hastily rendered, the work has an immediacy that combines with the emblazoned ‘Antonioni was here’ to produce an image calling on a number of visual influences. The flow of the text drawing the eye to follow the trickle of red down the canvas.
Firstly, the piece calls to the filmmaking of Michelangelo Antonioni, whose filmography is rich with visual references. The blood-red of the oil paint, flowing across the surface of the canvas, explores the creation of the dramatic, perhaps in a moment of violence. The juxtaposition between this applied surface, and the elephant in the image behind, lends the piece a level of uneasy abstraction, inviting the viewer to question the thematic links between the two.
