Description
This dynamic work by Gianni Colombo comes to life when the motor is activated. The orange and green marks on the two arms of the central structure begin to spin, whirling faster and faster until they create a compelling, constantly changing geometric pattern. The dance of bright colours against the dark background evokes the energy and movement of a city illuminated at night.

Colombo’s art is defined by movement and energy. He was a central figure in the rise of Kinetic art in the 1950s and ’60s, co-founding Gruppo T in 1959, and created interactive and dynamic works using diverse media ranging from painting to sculpture, from mechanical engines to electric light. His keen interest in physics, and his determination to break away from the traditional, static experience of art, led him to construct artworks in which moving elements, magnetic devices and lights captivate the viewer. He won the 1968 Venice Biennale with his work Elastic Space, a dark room in which viewers were faced with a moving grid of glowing elastic cords.
