Description
Simultaneously fierce and majestic, this powerful crocodile cast in bronze exudes a simple elegance. The slender form of the sculpture, with its curving tail, is enhanced by intricate details of the rough texture of its skin and flecks of 24 carat gold.
The title of the work, Sobek, alludes to the Ancient Egyptian deity who was associated with the Nile crocodile. Sobek was the god of the pharaohs' power, of fertility, and of military success. The artist has long taken inspiration from the Ancient Egyptians, and references to their sacred worship of animals and their belief in the connectedness of animal and human spirits are visible in many of her sculptural works. As is the case with Sobek, through her artworks, Harumi pays homage to the animal spirit that resides in us all.
