Antonio Canova was the greatest sculptor and the most celebrated artist of the Neoclassical period. He was recognised by contemporary critics and theorists as the one artist who was not only heir to the classical tradition but able to successfully supersede it. Poets such as George Gordon, Byron and Keats expounded on his works and his studio drew visitors from all over the world.
