Hervé Van der Straeten is an innovative designer who rose to prominence for his bold jewelry designs. Today, he is best known for his well-crafted furniture, mirrors, lighting, and accessories.

A graduate of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he originally studied painting but the accessories he designed quickly began to garner attention. In 1985, his designs were featured in a show for the iconic French fashion designer Thierry Mugler.  Shortly after, he was designing for several prominent names, including Alexander McQueen and Christian Lacroix. Having gained notoriety for his jewelry designs, Van der Straeten shifted his focus on furniture, stating in an interview, "For me, jewelry was more like a parenthetical. What I always wanted to do was to design furniture."

Van der Straeten's work draws inspiration from the natural world, geometry, and origami, while his bold, original forms combine classical materials with modern shapes and structures.  The artist's work has earned him distinction from the French government as a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.  His designs often feature voluminous forms and lattice-like constructions characterized by a sense of movement and playfulness.
