The proximity to Fontana and the Milanese Azimut group headed by Manzoni and Castellani, (the latter notoriously less outspoken) is here put into concrete form in a “canvas/not a canvas”, where the brusque gestures of Fontana’s cuts are replaced by a kind of meditative reflection on the concept of painting. The almost complete elimination of the pictorial surface relates to the neo-avant-garde discussions popular in Italy in the Sixties on the possible survival of painting as an artistic form. In this framework, Dadamaino acts radically on the canvas but with a contemplative and cold violence. This more calculated approach replaces a crime of passion with the capital punishment of the canvas.
