Ivan Theimer was born in 1944 in Olomouc. In the years 1963-1965, he graduated from the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs of Uherské Hradišt and began to collaborate with his friend, the architect Tomáš Cernoušek. The occupation of Czechoslovakia by Soviet troops in 1968 deeply moved the young sculptor in Olomouc and became a great source of creative inspiration. In the autumn of 1968, Ivan Theimer decided to emigrate to Paris. He studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts from 1968 to 1971, and later presented his first works in exhibitions abroad.
In 1973, he participated in the Biennale de Paris, and represented France the Venice Biennale in 1978 and 1982. Ivan Theimer worked for 70 years, with great achievements and to public acclaim. Theimer is one of the greatest living sculptors, creators of extraordinary bronzes: he put fascinating symbolic meanings into human, animals and plant forms. The variety of symbols Theimer uses is derived from his unique culture and sensitivity and his style is always haunting. We remain magnetized by his works, attracted into their depths. We can comprehend their most intimate details, remote yet absolutely modern.
Theimer’s sculptures are seen in public places of great prestige, such as the Monument of human rights and citizens of Paris located in the Champ de Mars, commissioned directly by Francois Mitterand, or the three bronze obelisks in the Eliseum Palace.
