Getty acquires painting by 19th-century French artist Sophie Frémiet

Robilant+Voena has sold an important work by the painter Sophie Frémiet (later Rude) to The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. Frémiet was a talented student of the neoclassical master Jacques-Louis David while he was in exile in Belgium. The Portrait of a Woman was painted by Frémiet in 1818 and was a huge success at the Brussels Salon of the same year. It shows an unknown, but fashionable, young woman dressed in a dark blue silk dress trimmed in white lace and satin, is complemented by a deep orange cashmere shawl. The picture demonstrates the artist's impressive rendering of fabrics and textures, and clearly shows the influence of Frémiet's teacher David, while suggesting her own particular talents and style.
