The Getty Museum acquires important state portrait by Anton Raphael Mengs

Robilant+Voena is pleased to announce the sale of an important state portrait by Anton Raphael Mengs (1728–1779) to The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. This magnificent portrait of Friedrich Christian, Prince of Saxony (1722–1763) was commissioned from the young prince in 1751, just a few years after Mengs had been appointed principal painter to the Saxon court in Dresden, Germany.

The portrait is a significant addition to the Museum's collections, joining three other works by Mengs. Davide Gasparotto, senior curator of paintings at the Getty Museum, says of the acquisition:

“With its burst of color and over-the-top grandeur, this painting is a magnificent addition to our extraordinary collection of early modern portraiture.”
