Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan have acquired A Lady in Costume (mid 18th Century) by Giacomo Ceruti. The present painting of a woman in elegant clothing, described as ‘Venetianising’ by Mina Gregori in her 1982 monograph on the artist, is likely an imagined figure, rather than a portrait of a specific individual. However, on account of the costume, it has been suggested that the sitter was dressed as 'Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots'.
