Artist Spotlight talks - Andrea APpiani
Saturday 26 June: 1–1.20pm
Sunday 27 June: 2.30–2.50pm
Married on 9 March 1796, Napoleon departed days later to command the French army in Italy. After his victory at Lodi, the Milanese artist Andrea Appiani painted Napoleon triumphant. He soon commissioned a pendant of his new bride, who joined him in Italy that July. Together, they form a belated pair of nuptial portraits, replete with symbols expressing the couple's hopes for their union and their rise to power. R+V has recently discovered that his portraits Napoleon and Josephine Bonaparte made their way to Britain c. 1797, their first portraits painted from life to arrive in this country.
