'A Group of Creole Women and their Servants in Dominica', oil on canvas, 36.8 x 64.8cm by Agostino Brunias (Rome 1730 - 1796 Dominica) was purchased by the Brooklyn Museum in late December 2010. This wonderful Caribbean conversation piece will be integrated into the Museum's permanent collection in early 2011.
“We have a large West Indian community,” said Richard Aste, the museum’s curator of European art. “When I saw it, it just screamed Brooklyn. We were looking for something from the 18th century, and we didn’t have anything like this.”
