Description

Tristano di Robilant (b. 1964, London) is an Italian-American artist living and working between Umbria and Venice. He graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz, where he was greatly influenced by the lectures of architectural historian and critic Reyner Banham (1922-1988).

The artist is best known for his glass and ceramic sculptures. Creating harmonious, delicately balanced forms with irregular translucent surfaces, the works interact with light for a mesmerising result.

Milestone (2024) is an example of di Robilant's signature glass sculptures, encapsulating his lyrical and organic style. Created in collaboration with master glassblower Andrea Zilio in Murano, Italy, this work is an embodiment of the intangible, intended by the artist to have multi-layered significance, rather than a strictly representation piece.

The concept behind the work is related to the 'milestones' of Ancient Rome, which marked distances from the heart of the city, specifically from the Milliarium Aureum, a marble column sheathed in bronze. All distances were measured from this point, and granite or marble markers placed at even increments alongside the road; thus conceiving the milestone. Yet, the word ‘milestone’ has a dual meaning: aside from being a physical monument, the term can denote a moment in time or an event which shifts the direction of one’s life. This is the moment from which the past and the future are measured.
