Stand M15

Coex513, Yeongdong-daero, Gangnam-gu, Seoul 06164

Robilant+Voena returns to Frieze Seoul with a presentation that highlights the gallery’s unique mixed specialisms in European Old Masters and twentieth-century Italian art, juxtaposed with examples from contemporary artists who approach eternal themes with a vision that reflects the sensibilities of today. The wide chronological scope, with works dating from across 400 years, reflects the exhibition by Robilant+Voena 800 Years of European Arts, currently on view at The Hyundai Seoul; the gallery will be holding a VIP event at The Hyundai to celebrate this exhibition during Frieze week.

In Robilant+Voena’s Frieze Seoul Stand M15, Old and Modern Masters enter into conversation with each other, revealing affinities across the centuries and between different geographical spheres. The selection opens with hand-selected paintings by Old Masters. The earliest works in the presentation date from the seventeenth century, with important examples by Michelangelo Cerquozzi, Carlo Dolci and Alessandro Tiarini. Examples from the nineteenth century include a charismatic portrait by French painter Jean-Joseph Weerts and a serene Neapolitan landscape by Frans Vervloet.

In the modern section, the impressive breadth of artworks reflects Robilant+Voena’s position as a leading gallery in Post-War Italian art, with pieces by Agostino Bonalumi, Lucio Fontana, Mimmo Rotella, Salvo, and Mario Schifano. This selection is complemented by selected pieces from international icons of twentieth-century art, including Sam Francis and Alex Katz.

The contemporary section encapsulates the variety and innovation of R+V’s artists, presenting paintings, sculpture, textiles, and digital art by established and emerging artists. Alongside two iconic works by Damien Hirst are a new sculpture by Barry X Ball, and an expressionist map painting by Julian Schnabel. Also on show are pieces by talented artists from R+V’s roster, including digital artist Daniel Ambrosi, sculptors Harumi Klossowska de Rola and Sergio Roger, and painters Antoine Roegiers and Cesar Santos.
